The Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire Aircraft Engine

The Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire axial-flow turbojet engine was an evolution of the 1941 Metropolitan-Vickers F.2 engine. Design work started in 1943 but Metropolitan-Vickers pulled out of the turbojet engine arena. The engine design and development passed on to Armstrong Siddeley, they further developed the engine which first ran in late 1948. Early examples of the Sapphire proved unreliable resulting in most aircraft producers initially relying on the  reliable Rolls-Royce Avon. Later design changes lead to a reliable and powerful engine, it became the first British turbojet production engine to exceed a 10,000 lbf  (44 kN) rating.

The Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire proved to be good enough for Curtiss-Wright to licence it's construction in America as the Wright J65 which was the chosen power-plant of the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, Martin B-57 and the Republic F-84F Thunderstreak.
