The F-4E Phantom was designed to rectify the F-4C's and F-4D's poor dog-fighting performance, this was achieved by internally mounting a 20 mm (.79 in) M61 Vulcan Cannon as well as other less noticeable changes (a gun-sight helped!), this increased the production cost in 1965 to $2.4 million per airframe. It is of note that the German Air-force (Luftwaffe) operated the McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom from 1971 until 1982, and it's McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantoms are to remain operational with the Luftwaffe until 2012 when they will be replaced by the Eurofighter 2000.
