The best known version of the Hawkeye is the E-2C which entered service in 1973 which can detect targets and threats within a three million cubic mile area. The Aircraft pictured above is a Grumman E-2b Hawkeye, the last of which was retired from active service in the mid 1990's. The Hawkeye has successfully been used in various roles including, search and rescue guidance, strike and interceptor control, surveillance coordination and as a communications relay platform, although most Hawkeyes are in service with the US Navy they are also used by many other Military Forces including both the French Navy and Israeli Air Force.
