The last two variants of the Nimrod to remain in service with the RAF were, the MR2 which was a maritime patrol aircraft (as pictured above), they were retired in May 2011, and the R1 which was a reconnaissance and electronic intelligence gathering aircraft, these were retired in June 2011. It is of note that a later variant, the Nimrod MRA4, was due to enter RAF service in 2010, they were all controversially destroyed in January 2011 due to financial considerations.
