Verville Sperry M-1 Messenger Military Aircraft

The Verville-Sperry M-1 Messenger was a communications aircraft designed by Alfred V. Verville in 1921 for the United States Army Air Service and built by Sperry Aircraft Company. The Sperry M-1 Messenger was not very successful in it's designated role and in consequence only 42 were built. The Sperry M-1 Messenger was used to develop the "Air Ship Hook" as shown on the picture above, this was a device to allow an aircraft to hook on to an airship in flight and a Sperry M-1 Messenger did in fact made the first airship "hook on and release" in December 1924, twelve Messengers were converted into the radio-controlled Messenger Aerial Torpedo (R/C flying bomb).
