De Havilland DH 60X Moth Military Trainer

The De Havilland DH 60 Cirrus Moth was designed as a two-seat touring and training biplane. The DH 60 Cirrus Moth prototype first flew in February 1925 from the companies Stag Lane airfield, it's pilot was it's designer, Geoffrey de Havilland. The name Cirrus relates to the aircraft's engine, a 60 hp (45 kW) ADC Cirrus Hermes. Although only 32 Cirrus Moths were produced and they were not sold to the military, the design proved to be the first stepping stone to a series of biplane trainers which cumulated in the RAF's WW2 Tiger Moth trainer.

Pictured above is a De Havilland DH 60X Moth, the "X" indicated that the aircraft had been fitted with the improved x-leg undercarriage which added suspension to the undercarriage for improved landing capability, and normally a more powerful and heavy engine than that fitted to a standard De Havilland DH-60 Moth. This particular 1928 DH-60X Moth (G-EBWD) was used as a pilot trainer at the Brooklands School of Flying, Richard Shuttleworth learnt to fly in this aircraft at Brooklands and then purchased it for his own use in 1932. Many De Havilland DH 60X Moths were "pressed" into RAF service during WW2 as basic trainers.
