Eberhart SE-5E Military Trainer Aircraft

When the United States entered World War I the US lacked a modern fighter aircraft, a logical course of action was to copy one of the best fighters already in use by America's new allies, with this in mind kits of parts were acquired to build the Royal Aircraft Factory's S.E.5A, and eventually also copy the parts. The main contractor tasked with this project was Curtiss Aeroplane, Curtiss were quite slow in getting the aircraft into production, when WW1 ended they had only produced one aircraft themselves and assembled a further 58 from British supplied parts.

In 1922 the Army Air Service required a number of advanced trainers for it's fighter pilots and it was decided to contract Eberhart Steel Products Co to rebuild 50 of the S.E.5A's as unarmed advanced trainers around new American built 180-hp Wright-Hispano "E" engines. The rebuilt aircraft were re-designated SE-5E's, the E indicating the new engine type.
