The Focke Wulf FW 190 represented a major improvement in fighter design when introduced in August 1941 and further development made the aircraft even further, like all successful fighters it was hard to fly until fully accustomed with it's handling characteristics, converting a pilot from a far lower performance aircraft could be a relatively slow process, or a dangerous one, risking both plane and pilot, both of which were in short supply. The obvious solution was to convert some older Focke Wulf FW 190 fighters into two seat tandem trainers, the second seat replaced the methyl alcohol/water tank, this lost the combat power boost but left the handling characteristics intact. |
