RAF Vickers VC10 Military Transport Aircraft

When British Airways retired it's fleet of 15 Vickers Super VC10 airliners in 1981 it sold 14 of the aircraft to the RAF for use as military transports to serve alongside the RAF's existing VC10 fleet. The RAF has named each of it's VC10 aircraft after individual Victoria Cross (VC) medal holders. The RAF currently operates 13 Vickers VC10's as both transport aircraft and aerial refuelling tankers. The VC10 aircraft pictured below is configured as a tanker aircraft with a refuelling pod under each of it's wings. The RAF retired it's last two VC10's on the 25th of September 2013.

  • Crew: Pilot, Co-pilot, Weapon systems officer, Flight engineer, Loadmaster and three stewards when carrying passengers rather than fuel or freight.
  • Length: 48.36m
  • Wingspan: 44.55m
  • Engines: Four 20,000lbs thrust Rolls Royce Conway turbofans
  • Maximum speed: 530kts
  • Maximum altitude: 43,000ft
 

Defensive Equipment

For defence purposes the RAF's VC10's are painted with a grey, low infrared emission paint and fitted with a Matador IRCM (Infrared Counter Measures) missile-protection system which uses two infrared jammers mounted under the aircrafts engines.
